GRB relaunched its community rehab programme on January 6 with fresh ideas on how to help those battling addiction and substance abuse.

Grace Recovery’s weekly Tuesday meetings are hosted at Grace Family Church, Ballito campus. The first session focused on the topic “Dealing with Disappointment.”
Organised and operated by husband-and-wife duo Barry and Kelly Pretorius, GRB aims to support individuals and their families in dealing with addictions such as class A and prescription drugs, alcohol, the growing prevalence of sex and pornography addiction, and marijuana, which is widely regarded as a “gateway” drug.

“Our meetings are different because we travel a recovery journey together. It’s about culture, which is important,” said Kelly. “We do things outside of the group, we do park runs, beach days and just hang out.”
GRB is affiliated with Project Exodus, a recovery programme that addresses substance dependence, compulsive behaviours and addiction through healthy recovery patterns. The couple encourages those in recovery to bring along a spouse, partner, family member or friend to meetings, so they can hear first-hand accounts, because they, too, are affected by the consequences of addiction.
Barry and Kelly also counsel couples in which one or both partners are in recovery.
“It’s about coping skills and mechanisms, which are very important,” said Kelly.
“A lot of people enter recovery but struggle to cope outside of meetings and relapse because there’s no support. All recovery groups are vital and necessary, but we focus on emotional intelligence and curbing impulses that can trigger anger and lead to relapse.
“It’s about focusing on what we can control, to help people and their supporters not only get into recovery but learn how to live outside of rehab and meetings.”
The support group meets every Tuesday at 6.30pm at Grace Family Church, Ballito.
